The Espresso Book Machine

The Espresso

There was a rumour just last year that the Espresso Book Machine (currently located in London’s Blackwell Bookstore) would be making a move to Oxford. That’s yet to happen, but I’m still holding out hope.

The Espresso is a really fascinating all-in-one book printing machine which prints, collates and binds any book within minutes. It’s forging the way in the self-publishing and could be a thing of the future as buyers can browse a catalogue and order a printed book from the machine operator in the store.

This is obviously advantageous to publishers who estimate the number of books to print and then end up pulping many of them or selling them off to remainder shops (then again, what consumer doesn’t like cheap books?) Working for a publisher, though, maybe I shouldn’t be saying that…Anyways, buy books! Learn about the Espresso! Go use it! It’s fun!

[UPDATE: Blackwell’s Oxford informed me that they’re actually waiting for the second version of the machine. No date set, but keep an eye out!]
