Oxford’s World Book Capital Bid
The World Book Capital is an annual award granted by UNESCO which acknowledges the best year-long programme proposed by a city to promote books and foster reading. Oxford’s bid is for the year from April 2014 to April 2015, but the winner of this bid will be announced in 2012. Oxford has unparalleled resources and a world renowned economy in place to support a programme of this kind. There are probably more major culturally diverse authors based in or around Oxford than in any comparable city in the world. World Book and Copyright Day was launched in 1996 to promote reading, publishing and the protection of intellectual property through copyright. The International Publishers Association, International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and the International Booksellers Federation all participate in the award selection, which has no financial prize.
